Rules and Regulations

29th to 31st July, 2024

Language

The language of the competition shall be English 

Eligibility

Law Schools / Colleges / Institutes / Universities, recognized by the Bar Council of India are eligible to participate in the National Level Moot Court Competition,2024. The participants should currently be pursuing their Bachelor’s Degree in Law, i.e. Three Year or Five Year Law Courses.

Composition of Teams

Each team shall comprise of two Mooter’s and may also have a Researcher.

Registration

1) The Participating team shall duly fill the Registration Form Provided and send it along with the Registration fee of Rs.4,000/- (Rupees Four Thousand only), which is not refundable. However, where an application is not accepted, the Registration fee will be refunded. The Registration shall be sent through Demand Draft drawn in favor of JOY UNIVERSITY and THE LAST DATE FOR SUBMITTING THE REGISTRATION FORM WITH FEE IS 03.05.2024. Spot registration will not be entertained. However the dean school of law, Moot Court Committee shall have discretion to entertain late application. The first 20 teams duly registered will be considered.

Each team shall be allotted a Team Code after Registration.

Structure of Tructure of Rounds

The oral rounds shall comprise of:
A) Preliminary Rounds
B) Quarter Final Rounds
C) Semi Final Rounds
D) Final Round

A) Preliminary Rounds

There shall be two Preliminary Rounds. Each team will be given the opportunity to argue on both sides (i.e. Petitioner and Respondent) in the Preliminary Rounds which shall be determined by way of drawing of lots. Each team shall get a total of minutes to present its case. This time will include five minutes of rebuttal. The division of time between the speakers is at the discretion of team members, subject to a maximum of minutes for any one speaker. Before the commencement of arguments, each team shall inform to the Court Clerk as to how it wishes to
allocate its minutes. RULES AND REGULATIONS The top B teams based on cumulative marks (written and oral submissions) shall qualify for the Quarter Final Rounds. In case of a tie, memorial score will be considered to break the tie. If the memorial marks are equal, then the speaker scores will be considered to break the tie. If the tie is not broken, then the team to advance to the Quarter final rounds will be decided by drawing of lots.

B) Quarter Final Rounds

In the Quarter Final round, each team shall argue for only one side, which shall be determined by drawing of lots. On the basis of knock-out, (four) teams shall advance to the Semi Final rounds. The rules governing the preliminary rounds regarding time are applicable to Quarter Final rounds.

In case of tie, the speaker scores scored at the Quarter Final rounds will be considered to determine team qualifying for the Semi Final rounds. If still tie is not broken, then the team advancing to the Semi final rounds will be decided by drawing of lots.

Semi Final Rounds

The rules governing the Quarter Final rounds shall be mutatis mutandis applicable to the Semi Final
rounds. On the basis of knock – out, two teams shall advance to the final round. 

Final Round

In the final round also each team shall argue for only one side which shall be determined by way of drawing of lots. Each team shall get a total of minutes to present its case. This time will include rebuttal. The division of time is at the discretion of the team members, subject to a maximum of minutes for any one speaker (including rebuttal time). In case of tie, the rules governing Quarter Final and Semi Final rounds shall be mutatis mutandis applicable to final round.

Written Submissions

Each team shall submit sets of written memorials ( Petitioner’s and Respondent’s memorials) & carry sets of memorials with them. The Cover Pages of the memorials for the Petitioners shall be in blue and for the Respondents shall be in red. 

The identity of the institution/team shall not be revealed for any reason and in any form whatsoever, anywhere in the memorials. After the cover page next page should be the name of the college/institution which will be removed later after giving code.

A  soft copy shall be mailed to moot@joyuniversity.edu.in only in MS Word (DOC) or PDF format on or before 15/07/2024.

The hard copies of the memorials shall be submitted on or before 15/07/2024, failure of which may result in cancellation of registration of the team. The hard copies of the memorial shall be printed from the DOC or PDF sent as soft copy. For evaluation of the memorial, either the hard copy or the soft copy may be used at the convenience of the organizers.

The written memorials shall conform to the set standards.

1) Written submissions shall be printed on one side of white standard A size paper with margins of one inch (2.5 cms) on all sides except the left side where margin shall be of 1.5 inch (3.75 cms).

2) The font and size of the text used in all parts of the written submissions (except the covers) shall be in 12 point Times New Roman and footnotes shall be in 10point Times New Roman.

3) The text in all parts of each written submission shall have . 1.5 lines spacing except the text of footnotes and headings which shall be single spaced.

4) The comprehensive arguments with appropriate citations shall be contained in the Pleadings. The teams shall follow the th 19thedition of the Bluebook mode of citation.

Marking Criteria For Memorials

The written submission shall include the following:

Disputes

Any dispute about the Moot Court Competition shall be referred to the Organizing Committee before
commencement of next round of the competition. In all matters of complaints or disputes, the decision of the Organizing Committee shall be final.

Dress Code

The official Dress Code for the Competition is as below:

Gentleman: Black Trousers, White Shirt, Black Blazer, Black Neck Tie and Black Formal Shoes.

Ladies: Black Trousers, White Shirt, Black Blazer and Black Formal Shoes.
